[1:00pm-6:00pm] Sustainable Farm Tour in Upstate SC
Description:
20 Sustainable Farms Featured in 4th Annual Upstate Farm Tour

Join Carolina Farm Stewardship Association and Whole Foods Market for South Carolina’s largest sustainable farm tour, June 5 &6.

The fourth annual Upstate Farm Tour takes place the weekend of June 5-6, 2010. The tour is a great opportunity for families to connect with our thriving agricultural community, and is co-sponsored by CFSA and Whole Foods Market.

Children learn to appreciate where their food comes from and are delighted to interact with local cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, rabbits, and even alpacas. Adults have an opportunity to learn about organic and sustainable production methods that can be used in their own backyard gardens.

The Upstate Farm Tour takes place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. both days and highlights 20 sustainable farms— those using organic or environmentally responsible growing practices.

With the idea of choosing local and organic food products becoming a priority for many families, the tour provides the opportunity to make those important farm-to-fork connections and discover sources for fresh, healthy food in our Upstate community.

The 2010 tour features a diversity of local farms, including fruit and vegetable growers, livestock producers, two dairies, a worm farm, mushroom farm, and a hydroponic producer.

A new highlight of this year’s tour is inclusion of the Bowie Old Farm Show where visitors can step back in time and gain hands-on experience with the traditional farming methods of generations past.

Two farms, Sharon Rose Farm in Woodruff, and Split Creek Farm in Anderson will be meal-stops on the tour, offering farm fresh food, cooked onsite for guests looking for a special on-farm lunch or supper. Many farms will be offering fun activities unique to the tour.

The Upstate Farm Tour is self-guided, and farms are located all around the Upstate, including Anderson, Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Laurens, and Spartanburg counties.

To take the tour, download a map and purchase entrance buttons online or get them both at Whole Foods Market in Greenville. Load up your vehicle with friends and family, pack a cooler in the trunk for all the farm-fresh goodies you’ll want to take home, then use the map to plot your course!

Buttons and maps are also available at these Upstate locations:

* Hub City Farmer’s Market (Spartanburg);
* Happy Cow Creamery (Pelzer);
* Live Oak Farm Store (Woodruff);
* Split Creek Farm (Anderson).

The tour costs $25 in advance per vehicle or cycle group. Entrance buttons may also be purchased on tour days at Whole Foods and at every farm for $30. Individual farms may be toured for $10.

Proceeds support the work of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.

[3:00pm-4:00pm] Wild Mushrooms at WNC Nature Center
Description:
Wild Mushroom Presentation

Would you like to identify those big brown mushrooms popping out of your mulch, or the pretty yellow ones along woodland paths in the summer?

Come to the WNC Nature Center on June 6, 2010 from 3-4 pm and discover the most common edible mushrooms you're likely to find in the fields and forests of WNC.

Charlotte Caplin, Asheville Mushroom Club president, is offering a beginners' class which will focus on choice edibles such as chanterelles, morels and chicken of the woods. Besides these easily identified edibles she will point out the few poisonous mushrooms that lurk in our hills.

Participation is limited to 35 participants and you will need to call Keith Mastin quickly at (828) 298-5600, ext 305 to reserve your spot.
