10:00am New Entry [10:00am-6:00pm] Western North Carolina Craft, Architecture & Design Expo
Description:
Handmade Beauty

For years, HandMade in America has introduced countless people to the unique and wonderous creations of our region’s talented artisans. This month, the organization is taking that experience one step closer to your living space with The Western North Carolina Craft, Architecture & Design Expo—bringing together artists, designers, and architects, who can make your house a haven for handcrafted beauty.

The two-day expo, July 25 & 26, features tours of three craft-filled homes in Asheville and an artisans showcase of handmade architectural and design elements (such as wrought-iron candelabras, oak furniture, and blown-glass lamps). Eighteen design vignettes provide the main attraction. These eight-by-10-foot spaces built by teams of local architects, interior designers, and artists serve as examples of how crafts can be integrated into the planning and design of a house. Models include a home library, outdoor living room, and child’s bedroom. Best of all, the creators of these showrooms will be on hand to collaborate on ideas for your home.

Don’t miss the workshops and seminars on topics from Building Markets for Artists to the Continuity of Craft in WNC. One myth, which program director Barbara Benisch hopes to dispel, is that handmade objects are more expensive than mass-produced items. According to a study by HandMade in America, artisan-made elements for the home are comparable in cost to commercial items, yet offer more value. “Something that’s been made by hand has the connection of the human being who made it,” she says, which translates to more depth and soul in your abode.

8:00pm New Entry [8:00pm] Brevard Little Theatre presents "The Mousetrap"
Description:
The third production of the Brevard Little Theatre’s 60th season, The Mousetrap, one of the most popular mysteries by Agatha Christie, will open on Friday, June 18 for six performances.

The director of the production, Asheville’s Michael Wilson, is directing in Brevard for the first time. The cast is evenly split between actors from Brevard and Asheville. It is comprised of Michele & Marvin Barg, Michael Boulos, Sonia Arnold, L. Joseph Barcia, Jr., Ann Strother, Mandi Hart and Scott Bean. Maureen Edick is the producer and Liz Malzone the stage manager.

The Mousetrap originally opened in London in 1952 and, with over 24,000 performances so far, is now the longest running show of the modern era. The play is also known for its twist at the end that audience members are always asked not to reveal. Previously performed by BLT in 2000, The Mousetrap is being reprised by popular request.

The story is about a young couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston, who have started up a new hotel in the converted Monkswell Manor. They are snowed in together with four guests and an additional traveller, who ran his car into a snowdrift.

A policeman named Trotter arrives on skis to inform the group that he believes a murderer is on his way to the hotel, following the mysterious death of a woman in London. When one of the hotel's guests is killed, they realize that the murderer is already there. The suspicion falls first on an erratic young man who fits the description of the supposed murderer. However, it quickly transpires that the killer could be any one of the guests, or even the hosts themselves. The Mousetrap keeps the audience guessing the entire time.

The play will be performed the two weekends of June 18th and June 25th at the American Legion Hall on East Jordan St. in Brevard.

Play dates and curtain times are: June 18, 19, 25, and 26 - 8:00 pm, and June 20 and 27 - 3:00 pm.

For additional information or to make reservations, contact BLT at 828.884.BLTR [2587]. Additional information is also available at the BLT website: www.brevardlittletheatre.com.
