More about The Many Faces Tour

As part of the Many Faces of Asheville Bus Tour we will visit 3 houses of worship including either Beth Israel (House of Israel) or Beth Ha Tephila (House of Prayer) in Asheville. Each congregation is over 100 years old with 150 – 250 families counted in the membership. There is also a Jewish Community Center that was founded over 70 years ago. Asheville is perhaps the smallest city in the US to support a Jewish Community Center. Do you have anything about to share about the Jewish community in the South?

We will also visit either Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox or St. Lawrence Basilica. Both bring classic architecture and strong communities to our region. The Greek community in Asheville began over 100 years ago.
St. Lawrence Basilica was designed by Rafael Guastavino and hosts a Spanish Mass each Sunday night at 5:00 pm. What will be the impact of the growth of the Latino community on the Catholic Church in the US in the coming years?

Islamic Center. In the 1990’s Asheville was host to the beginnings of the Muslim community in WNC with the opening of the Center in downtown. Now they have their own building and host prayer services every Friday at Noon. To learn more visit – web site here. Do you have anything to share about the Muslim community in the South?

Part of this tour will include a walking tour of downtown Asheville. While on the tour we will talk about Helen Lewis who founded the NC Women’s Suffrage Movement in Asheville in 1893 on the steps of the courthouse. She was inspired to do that after having visited the Women’s Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Chicago? What is the value of women gathering together in one place to effect change?
