Description:
Conscious Movement and Aging:
An Integral Approach to Teaching Yoga,
Tai Chi and Qigong

August 26 - 29, Prama Institute

The Conscious Movement and Aging Workshop is designed to teach yoga, tai chi and qigong instructors and advanced students how to offer integrated and age-conscious instruction to the fastest growing part of our population - the over 50s group. This workshop will take place at the Prama Institute on August 26 - 29, 2010 and will cost $350 for accomodations and program. Participants can earn Yoga Alliance-approved CEUs for 25 hours.

Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong are increasingly recognized for their positive impact on health and quality of life. With the reality of an aging population, increased incidence of chronic disease & fall-related injuries and an influx of conscious movement providers, now is the time to create a more integrated and age-conscious approach.

The presentations will look at competency based outcomes that:
Inform older clients of the preventive and therapeutic benefits of yoga and tai chi based on evidence by students and/or teacher’s knowledge of current initiatives and organizations promoting self care in aging.
Obtain accurate and relevant health information regarding health and lifestyle strengths and risks.
Assess older clients standing balance, walking balance, upper and lower body strength, vision, hearing, and attentiveness.
Plan class sequences in yoga including alternate and modified poses to help students participate fully and safely.
Modify tai chi warm-up exercises and form movements so that students with health risks can participate fully and safely.
Evaluate effectiveness of yoga postures at intervals through client self monitoring, journaling, and brief questionnaires (client and observer ratings).

[All day event] Goombay! 2010
Description:
Goombay! 2010 - August 27 - 29 - Visit ymicc.org for schedule and more information.

With two stages (Pack Place Park and Market Street in downtown Asheville), a larger festival area, and entertainment from jazz, soul, gospel, reggae to stiltwalkers, drummers and a parade, this is a Goombay you won't want to miss.

Festivities start on Friday, August 27th at 12:00pm. There will be live entertainment from 12:00pm until 9:30pm on Friday, 12:00pm to 10:00pm on Saturday, and Sunday begins with a worship service at 11:00am and ends with a dove release and the closing ceremonies at 6:00 pm.

Don’t forget the delicious food and amazing local wares that will be available from a variety of vendors (long-time favorites and new) throughout the festival area, as well.

Children's Area will be opened from 1:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday Only. It will be located at the Ray Auditorium.

The YMI Cultural Center's "Goombay!" Festival brings a variety of entertainment that delights every festival-goer. From Steel Drums, African-America Dancers, local Gospel Groups, and Contemporary Rhythm Bands, the activities are geared for families.

The Festival-goer can enjoy an authentic Caribbean Meal at "Island of Delight" Café and see vendors line the streets with everything from ice cream to Third World Crafts.

The African-Caribbean style festival is brought to the Asheville Community with pleasure by the YMI Cultural Center, Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, North Carolina Arts Council, Community Arts Council of WNC and the Friends of the YMI Cultural Center.

Since 1982, the YMI Cultural Center has presented Goombay!, one of several worldwide variations of the centuries-old celebration. Goombay! can be viewed as a Cultural Expression of a people.

Goombay! emerged during slavery days in Bermuda. Both music and rhythm were brought form Africa and West Indies.

The original dancers used a skin-covered drum that was called "Gombey" meaning rhythm. In the Bahamas the word is "Goombay" and in Jamaica, the dance is known as "Gumbay". The Goombay dancers wear colorful costumes and high headdresses topped with feathers. Often times, grotesque masks help to enhance the free and exotic movements.

Description:

Studio 103 Fine Art Gallery presents one of Asheville's Darlings, "folk artist", Moni Hill. Artist reception Friday August 27th from 5-8 pm. Wine and cheese will be served, music, FUN. Exhibit runs through September 22nd.

Moni Hill is quickly becoming one of Asheville's most sought after artists for personal collections. Fun and colorful and full of joy.

Moni Hill's palette consists mostly of cadmiums and cobalts. Things that excite her about her paintings are the hidden patches of canvas or scraps of old jeans that are primed on to all of the wood panels; the lead pencil lines which offer proof of the process; new color combinations; and unexpected object placement.
In her work she seeks peace and resolution in the midst of life's contrast.

[7:00pm] ROCK and RESCUE at The Grey Eagle with Animal Compassion Network
Description:
Rock and Rescue with Animal Compassion Network
August 27 benefit concert at The Grey Eagle will help local families in need of free pet food
Asheville, NC

On Friday, August 27, Aaron LaFalce, The Blue Hotel, and Pierce Edens and The Dirty Work will perform at the Rock and Rescue benefit concert for Animal Compassion Network at The Grey Eagle. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Animal Compassion Network’s long-running, free pet food assistance public program and its other lifesaving programs.

“In addition to helping homeless pets find loving families, Animal Compassion Network is equally committed to keeping family pets in the homes they already have,” said Animal Compassion Network Executive Director Eileen Bouressa.

“Sometimes it can be as simple as helping to feed a family pet until things get better. “
Animal Compassion Network purchases pet food that is then distributed for free through partnering social service agencies to families in need.
Sheryl Olsen from Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM), one of the agencies participating in the program said, "The pet food donation program has blessed many, many of our clients.”

Lynn Dunn from Meals on Wheels, another participating agency said: “We are extremely happy to have access to ACN's pet food donations because, prior to this program, people were feeding their own lunches to their pets.”
Called “Rock and Rescue,” the concert will help raise awareness and funds for this lifesaving program. Like most charities, Animal Compassion Network has seen a dramatic drop in donations in this economic downturn. However the need for ACN’s Public Assistance Programs has increased exponentially. Animal Compassion Network is relying on this benefit concert to raise enough money to ensure that no cat or dog in our area suffers starvation or loses their family for lack of pet food.

Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the benefit concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are a $10 minimum donation. Bring a bag of dog or cat food and you will be entered in a drawing to win a fabulous raffle prize.
