Description:
Swannanoa gets a taste of surreal corporate intrigue with Warren Wilson Theatre’s production of Sheila Callaghan’s wise and witty new play, Fever/Dream.
Fever/Dream is an updated, hip and darkly comic version of the classic Life is a Dream by the Spanish Renaissance playwright Calderón. Callaghan’s play had its world premiere just this year at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC, attracting the national attention of playgoers and critics alike.
The play follows the story of the imprisoned Segis Basil, the son of big business executive Bill Basil. Segis, by the orders of his father, has been chained to a desk and forced to work in customer service in the basement of the Basil Enterprises skyscraper. Life is monotonous and inhumane for Segis until a disillusioned bike courier and her nerdy friend discover him. Together, the trio rattle the whole office building, shaking-up ennui-stricken video-blogging corporate associates and uncovering executive plots on their way up the management chain. Released from his prison, will Segis succeed in transforming corporate culture in the age of new media, or will he be returned to his customer service dungeon and believe it’s all been a dream?
Sheila Callaghan is a working playwright who creates relevant and meaningful plays for the blogging and tweeting Echo Boomer generation. She has written numerous critically acclaimed plays such as Scab, Crawl Fade to White, Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake), We Are Not These Hands, Dead City, Lascivious Something, Kate Crackernuts, and That Pretty Pretty; or, The Rape Play. She is the recipient of the Princess Grace Award for emerging artists, a Jerome Fellowship from the Playwright's Center in Minneapolis, a MacDowell Residency, a 2005 Cherry Lane Mentorship Fellowship, the Susan Smith Blackburn Award, and the prestigious Whiting Award. Callaghan is also a writer for the television series The United States of Tara, starring Toni Collette and created by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody.
Director and Theatre Department Co-Chair Ron Bashford chose Fever/Dream to showcase the best new American playwriting at Warren Wilson and to provide students with the opportunity to work on a play that reflects contemporary issues with a fresh perspective.
Fever/Dream performs at Kittredge Theatre on the Warren Wilson College Campus on March 4, 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. and March 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets are free for all students, $5 for seniors and Warren Wilson alumni, and $10 general admission.
As collaborators, the students and staff of Warren Wilson Theatre strive to create some of the most exciting and interesting theatre in the Asheville area at exceptionally affordable prices. All performances are open to the public. For ticket information, call 828-771-3040 or e-mail theatre@warren-wilson.edu.

Description:
The Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, recently relocated to Warren Wilson College from UNCA, is hosting two workshops in March on Renovation, Repair and Painting Training.
The workshops, to be held in Jensen Lecture Hall on the WWC campus, are scheduled for March 6 and March 19 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. each day. The training is designed for contractors, painters and all others working on home-improvement projects in structures built before 1978. Workshop instructors are Linda Block, certified as a lead-risk assessor by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and Adrianne Weir, a certified lead inspector.
Participants will learn how to protect their health and that of their families and clients when working in an environment containing lead paint, varnish, stains or shellac. Common renovation activities such as sanding, cutting and demolition can disturb lead-based paint and create hazardous lead dust and chips that can harm the health of adults and children.
Lead-safe training certification for contractors is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before April 22, 2010 and is good for five years. Each participant who successfully completes the course at Warren Wilson will receive a protective Tyvek suit, N-100 dust mask, course materials and an EPA Certificate of Completion.
For more information about the March workshops or the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at Warren Wilson, contact program coordinator Linda Block at 828-771-5821 or lblock@warren-wilson.edu.

There is an ancient Oriental saying that states, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." We at Asheville SCORE would add that it's probably a good idea to be headed in the right direction when that step is taken. Our How to Start a New Business in Tough Times seminar is designed to point the new or potential business owner in the right direction.
This seminar provides an overview of key elements and issues that every business owner must face: the Business Plan, Record Keeping (for tax/inventory/accounting), Legal Structure, Financing, Promotion/Marketing and Risk Management/Insurance (workers' comp and liability).
Any person starting a business without this knowledge may be taking those aforementioned initial steps toward a cliff, while admiring the clouds in the sky!
Our five-speaker team will bring their expertise to you in an easy-to-grasp manner, so that by the end of the session you will have a realistic understanding of what you need to do to get your business off on the right foot. There will be ample opportunities to ask specific questions of each speaker.
Here’s a fact: most business start-ups fail due to bad business decisions made by the owners. This seminar will help you make the right decisions during the critical formative stages of your organization. The seminar runs until 2:00, so lunch is included in the seminar fee.
Kerry Friedman is a partner in the Asheville law firm of Patla, Straus, Robinson & Moore, PA, specializing in business and corporate law. He will make you aware of the various legal forms of business organizations and the advantages /disadvantages of each so that you can make the best decision for your business. In addition, this is an opportunity for you to become familiar with a broad variety of the legal issues of your business and the options available to you.
Glenn Pirrong is an Asheville SCORE counselor with an extensive background in finance and general management. Prior to purchasing and operating his own company he was the CFO of a NASDAQ-traded public company. Earlier he held senior financial positions with major corporations and was the president of a subsidiary company. His presentation will cover many areas of obtaining financing for small business.
William ‘Chip’ Williamson is President of Hutton Vincent Williamson Mclean Insurance Company, located in Asheville, NC. Chip started his career as a field agent and then eventually became President of Schley and Williamson Agency in Asheville. He successfully merged his company with two other insurance agencies in Western North Carolina. An Asheville native, Chip is active in his church and various community organizations. RiverLink is an exciting place with an abundance of opportunities for volunteers to get involved. From office work to helping us host special events to cleaning litter from local waterways, RiverLink can match most everyone with a way to help out. We rely on the help of volunteers and gratefully appreciate the talent, skills, and interests our volunteers bring to the table.
Its staff is small, but RiverLink is a non-profit mouse that roars, and it's the volunteers who make that roar felt. Western North Carolinians (and others) who would like to be involved in restoring the French Broad Watershed as a place to live, work and play, are invited to join the team by attending one of two volunteer information sessions on March 10. There's a morning session at 10 a.m. and an afternoon session at 5 p.m. at the RiverLink offices, 170 Lyman Street in the River Arts District of Asheville.
The information session will detail RiverLink's volunteer positions in a Powerpoint presentation. Volunteers will have a chance to fill out a volunteer application, and the Volunteer Coordinator, Dave Russell, will be available to answer questions and help everyone find their best fit at RiverLink.
Please RSVP to Dave Russell by calling (828) 252-8474, ext. 118 or via e-mail at volunteer@riverlink.org.

What: Bench Grafting and cloning around!
When: Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 10:00-3:00
Where: Location: Westwood Co-housing
How much: $40.00
Two things I like to do most in the world is chasing after bee swarms, and grafting fruit trees. Learn to graft your own fruit trees!
This is nothing short of magical when you learn to stick a branch of one tree onto another and it grows. Granted, it harks a little of Dr. Frankenstein, but you won't need a big scary castle to resurrect a favorite tree from Grandma’s yard, or a favorite cider tree selection. Just a ‘bench and the comfort of working indoors for this, the civilized way of grafting, is all that is needed.
Discussed and illustrated will be the whip and tongue, and the cleft grafts, rootstock varieties, seedlings versus clones, aftercare, and setting up your own nursery for income diversification.
Included in the price is one rootstock, choice of several varieties of budwood, and aftercare materials. I will have plenty of rootstock for sale to do multiple grafts if desired.
I encourage people to bring their own varieties of apple tree cuttings to graft or to swap and share with other participants. (See below for proper budwood (scion) harvesting and storage.
Seeing as a young, healthy, organic fruit tree costs $30.00 this class nearly pays for itself with one graft.
Time of classes:
Classes will run from 10:00AM - 3:00PM (with a lunch break) Please come a 15 minutes early to sign in and get settled.
Lunch and what else to bring:
Please bring a bag lunch with you so we can eat together. A large part of Fruit school is fellowship with other enthusiasts. We can talk about a fruit club. Not to mention saving gas.
Bring hand pruners and appropriate clothes for the weather as we will be outside for some of the programs.

The Asheville Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and the Colburn Earth Science Museum are kicking off their third annual series of free scientific climate change talks with the panel discussion “Climate Change and Local Food and Agriculture” at 7p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Diana Wortham Theatre.
Dr. Anne Waple, president of the local AMS chapter, author or editor of over a dozen national climate reports, and a manager of climate assessments at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Asheville, will moderate the discussion.
Scheduled panelists are Charlie Jackson, executive director of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project; Amanda Stone, Buncombe County Cooperative Extension Agent; Laura Lengnick, Ph.D., a Warren Wilson College professor of environmental studies; and David Kendall, Madison County Cooperative Extension Agent.
“Asheville's growing reputation as a 'foodie' town means fresh, local, organic produce can be found in almost every supermarket and on many of our restaurant's tables,” Waple said. “And yet, even as the food revolution is taking a firm hold, we face the challenge of climate change. Problems such as new pests and diseases, longer droughts and more intense rainfall, as well potential benefits such as a longer growing season, will impact what we grow and consequently what we eat. Our goal is to lead a community discussion to investigate expected impacts as well as potential solutions to develop secure and sustainable food and farming in Western North Carolina.”

SEMINAR: BUSINESS PLAN
Sponsored by Mountain 1st Bank & Trust
Save $5 by pre-registering! Visit http://www.ashevillescore.org/businessplan.htm
Ask any banker if they would consider lending money to you for a business that does not have a Business Plan. Once they wipe the tears of laughter from their face, they will look at you sympathetically and say, "Of course...NOT!". Why would they do such a mean spirited thing?
Lenders know that without a Business Plan (1) They cannot make a valid judgment about whether your business idea is a good one or not and (2) They cannot be sure that you have thought through all the essential issues of your proposed business. And guess what... neither can you!
Join our Business Plan workshop and learn how to assess the real chance your business has to survive in today's hotbed economy.
The speakers are successful business persons who will bring you first-hand insights.

Billy Jonas plays a Hands of Hope benefit concert at the Orange Peel on March 21.
Seeing Billy Jonas perform live is not so much a concert as it is an experience. Known primarily as a percussionist, Jonas is much, much more. His singalongs and music - much of it made on found-object instruments -- bring smiles to faces aged 2 to 80. A Billy Jonas performance combines singalongs, bangalongs and whisperalongs. Improvised songs featuring audience participation are a mainstay.
In a special Hands of Hope benefit that will help RiverLink and others, Jonas brings his barely-contained wackiness to Asheville's Orange Peel on Sunday, March 21. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m., with Jonas scheduled to crank up the fun at 3:00. Cost is $10 for kids age 2 and up, and $15 for adults. The Orange Peel is located at 101 Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville. Call the Peel at (828) 225-5851 for more information.

UNC Asheville Holds Tenth Annual F-Word Film Festival;
Two Feminist Films to be Screened
UNC Asheville will hold the 10th annual “F-Word Film Festival: A Celebration of Images By and About Women (But For All Audiences)” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. Two award-winning films, “Club Native” and “Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority,” will be screened. A panel discussion with UNC Asheville faculty and students will follow the screenings. The event is free and open to the public.
In “Club Native,” filmmaker Tracey Deer examines the Mohawk society of her hometown Kahnawake, an Indian reserve in Canada. In Kahnawake there are two unspoken rules: never marry a non-Native, and never have a child with a non-Native. In a community where membership status rests on the measurement of blood “purity,” following one’s heart requires risking one’s Mohawk status, as well as one’s family and community. The 75-minute film has won a number of awards, including the Award of Commendation from the Society for Visual Anthropology Film Festival, the Colin Low Award for Best Canadian Documentary and an Honourable Mention for the Alanis Obomsawin Best Documentary Award.
“Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority,” explores the political story of Patsy Takemoto Mink, an Asian American woman who battled racism and sexism and redefined American politics. In 1965 she became the first woman of color in the United States Congress. Seven years later, she ran for the U.S. presidency and co-authored Title IX, the landmark legislation that opened up higher education and athletics to America’s women. The 56-minute film was directed by Kimberlee Bassford, and has received a host of awards, including the Hawaii International Film Festival Audience Award for Favorite Documentary, the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature and the Zora Neale Hurston Award for Best Documentary Film.
