Description:
Dear Friends – Eighteen months ago, we began asking for your support in
winning access to the “white spaces” spectrum – the vacant TV channels –
in order to expand broadband Internet access in WNC and other underserved
areas.
In November 2008, we won that FCC vote with a stunning and unanimous 5-0
decision. At that time, our public-interest and industry allies estimated
that this new “white spaces” (WS) broadband wireless technology would be
on the market in 18-24 months.
Unfortunately, this estimate is not panning out. There are several reasons
for this delay, not the least of which is the economic collapse.
But momentum to solve the rural broadband crisis is building again in
Washington.
Last year, Congress ordered the FCC to draft a National Broadband Plan to
address this crisis and more. That plan was published in March, and
shortly thereafter the Wall Street-backed telephone and cable companies –
and their allies – launched a ferocious campaign to weaken the FCC and
block reform by trumpeting “a government take-over of the Internet.”
I recently published a guest column on this in the Asheville
Citizen-Times:
http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20100616/OPINION03/306160011/FCC-needs-to-rethink-broadband-regulation
I will also be discussing these developments Thursday, July 1 in a talk
entitled “Who Will Control the Internet in the 21st-Century?” This talk is
set for 7:30 p.m. at Jubilee Community, 46 Wall Street, in downtown
Asheville. [If you are interested in having this talk in your community,
please contact MAIN at 828.255.0182.]
Please share this link with your friends and neighbors. It includes a PDF
link to a flyer which you can print and post in your community.
Please join us July 1 to find out how you can help solve our rural
broadband crisis. And please continue to visit the MAIN homepage –
http://www.main.nc.us – for updates as this epic battle for control of the
Internet develops.

Five Aramaic Layers of Conscious Creation ~
Sunday, July 4, from 2-4 pm
Unity Center, Fletcher NC
Dale Allen Hoffman offers stunning insights from original Aramaic scriptures and other ancient manuscripts about the seemingly "miraculous" capacity of the human mind and the awakening consciousness of humanity. The program also draws on wisdom from the teachings of Ernest Holmes, creator of the Science of Mind philosophy.
The program climaxes with a radical reframing of the concepts of faith, creation and consciousness and offers a reality-altering re-interpretation of Matthew 21:21 "Say to this mountain: Be removed and be cast into the sea".
Learning Objectives:
1. A thorough exploration of Meeltha (KJV "The Word"; Greek "Logos", Hebrew "Torah"), the flowing forth of Life Itself, from Life, into life, through Life and as Life.
2. An evaluation of the now heavily dualistic concept of Hayyemanootah (KJV: "Faith") and an in-depth discussion of its ancient near-Eastern Semitic Aramaic and Hebrew roots as the core state of one’s being and intention.
3. Practices to foster the conscious recognition of the unconscious habit of identifying Being and Physical Manifestation as two separate energies. Practices to foster the relinquishment of the dualist beliefs of cause and effect as individual components within Creation rather than as one singular process of expansion.
4. A thorough investigation of Slootah (KJV: "Prayer") as the focused vision, trap or "cupping" against the expansive force of Rookha.
Love Offering: $25 suggested.
Dale Allen Hoffman is an "eternal student of the Aramaic teachings of Yeshua (Jesus) and a 15-year teacher of spiritual insights from the ancient Aramaic language and culture. He has been a featured writer and guest for several publications and radio programs and is the Director of the international Aramaic Healing Circle. Dale is also a member of The Guild of Spiritual Mentors. daleallenhoffman.com

The weekly heats for the WNC Chefs Challenge take place every Tuesday, starting May 18. Fourteen chefs will pair off in head-to-head competitions at The Flying Frog Café. Then the audience will score the dishes to determine who advances to the final competition. Tickets to these culinary events are only $39 per guest (not including drinks, tax, and gratuity).

Soul Series: Film "Amazing Grace"
Wednesday, July 7 at 7 pm
Unity Center, Fletcher, NC
The true story of William Wilberforce who stood against tyranny, dedicating his life to the abolition of slavery. His story continues to inspire millions to this day.
Elected to the House of Commons at the age of 21, and on his way to a successful political career, William Wilberforce, over the course of two decades, took on the English establishment and persuaded those in power to end the inhumane trade of slavery.
Wilberforce's faith in God and his commitment to see the end of slavery eventually delivered him a very hard fought victory. Today, perhaps more than ever, we need men like William Wilberforce.
Walden Media and Bristol Bay Productions state they have received letters from individuals all over the world struggling against evil and oppression; in many cases this film has inspired them to stand and believe that they too can make a difference. The world needs people who are willing to stand apart and commit themselves to a better tomorrow, who make a difference in the world and in the community.
"Amazing Grace" is a full feature film released in 2007, rated PG, starring Ioan Gruffudd (Black Hawk Down), Albert Finney (Erin Brockovich), Romola Garai (Vanity Fair), Michael Gambon (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Benedict Cumberbatch (Hawking), Rufus Sewell (Legend of Zorro), Ciaran Hinds (Rome) and introduces Youssou N'Dour.
Invite your friends and neighbors to view this true story. Love Offering.

Asheville, NC -- "Stars on a Vacant Lot" doesn't sound like much of a dance party. "Stars on the River" sounds much better, and that's why RiverLink and Terpsicorps are teaming up for a July 10 cleanup of the RiverLink Sculpture Plaza at 121 Riverside Drive.
In March of this year, RiverLink finally got the two old blue buildings on the property torn down, opening a beautiful winter-time view of the French Broad River. Left is an expanse of cement pad just perfect for the Terpsicorps "Stars on the River" dance event at the site on August 7. All that is currently missing, however, is a view of the river.
Spring brought a wall of Japanese Knotweed, a tenacious invasive species that can grow roots down to seven feet deep and send them crawling out as far away as 75 feet, that blocks the river view that makes the property special.
"Without some weed control prior to the event, we'd have to call the event, 'Stars on a Vacant Lot,'" said RiverLink Volunteer Coordinator Dave Russell, "Because the knotweed is so tall and thick that only in one little spot can you actually see the river. You may as well be on some vacant lot in Texas."
The July 10 cleanup will kick off at 9 a.m. and go until noon. RiverLink and Terpsicorps volunteers will both be on the scene, and Russell is extending an invitation to the public to come out and bring as many "elements of floral destruction as possible: machetes, slingblades, old lawnmowers, etc. are welcomed."
"There are elements to this cleanup other than weed control," says Russell. "There is also broken glass, boards with nails, old tires, and general tire-gouging and high-heel-shoe-grabbing objects scattered about. Long pants and gloves are recommended. Bring wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes ... everything but the utility shed itself."
RiverLink is looking to have the event catered, so there is a good possiblity of a free lunch. Call or e-mail Russell with questions or to RSVP: volunteer@riverlink.org or 828-252-8474 ext. 18, or on the cell at (828) 545-9099.
"There's a French Broad River behind this knotweed hedge," says RiverLink's Dave Russell, "And she is beautiful. Come out on July 10 at 9 a.m
Come on Thursdays, have a glass of wine or a beer, enjoy simple supper and listen to some live music with us. We focus on roots, folks and world music. Come listen.

RiverLink, Terpsicorps team up for cleanup, dance event
Come out on July 10 at 9 a.m.

THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE IN TASTE
In this richest of culinary seasons, the Seasonal School of Culinary Arts is poised to guide you across two weeks of intensive hands-on instruction, complete with wine tastings, artisanal beer tastings, sessions of food songs and stories, morning walks to whet your appetite, forays into the garden to identify and gather ingredients, a cookbook to take home with you for reference all year, and many other wondrous surprises. The second week (July 18-24) will focus on creative and succulent ways to cook, both preventatively and curatively, for those around us with specific health challenges.
The Sesasonal (formerly Swannanoa) School of Culinary Arts leads students of all ages and backgrounds in hands-on immersion in a variety of experiences designed to awaken and broaden the palate, lead you closer to the source of the food you prepare, and provide a panoply of skills that will help celebrate the ordinary in extraordinary fashion. Culinary aficionados may sign up for one or both weeks in our Asheville location, or, if you have time or budget restraints, you may sign up simply for the day whose theme interests you the most. Each day consists of a 3-hour class with a master chef, a gourmet lunch, and a recreational afternoon/evening session.
This year’s Asheville line-up includes Grove Park Inn’s executive chef Denny Trantham, Flying Frog’s executive chef Vijay Shastri, Fig’s Bistro’s executive chef Bill Klein, Biltmore Doubletree’s executive chef Todd Levick, Table at Crestwood’s executive chef Chuck Nelson, award-winning caterer Laurey Masterton, Everyone Cooks’ Michael Gentry, Picasso’s Plate’s Chris Aquilino, Discover Italian’s Wally Maria Mazzucco, Log Cabin Cooking’s Barbara Swell, pastry expert Cynthia Pierce, Montford Walk-In Bakery’s Jennifer Thomas, private chef Dee Dee Arthur, author and food blogger Debby Maugans, Williams-Sonoma instructor Mary Collins-Shepard, caterer Karen Ferrel, Hawaiian luau specialist Patrick Landeza, edible landscape artist Nan Chase, environmental specialist Mark Brenner, wine expert Eberhard Heide, master brewer Brian Cole, herbalist and garden manager Diana Schmitt McCall, aromatics specialist Katie Keyes, ethnobotonist Marc Williams, Asheville Slow Food cornerstone Eve Davis, Warren Wilson Dean of Work Ian Robertson, and gastronomist director Susi Gott Séguret.
Enrolment in the Asheville sessions is $1400 per week. A Bridge Session expedition to the Biltmore Estate Winery, with lunch at the Wine Bistro will be offered on July 17, for $250. Opening nights, which include a lecture and reception with Chef Denny Trantham on July 11 and Chef Michael Gentry on July 18 are open to the general public. “To restore the land one must live and work in a place.
To work in a place is to work with others.
People who work together in a place become a community,
and a community, in time, grows a culture.
To work on behalf of the wild is to restore culture.”

Join us for a battle between 14 of the area's top chefs!
The weekly heats for the WNC Chefs Challenge take place every Tuesday, starting May 18. Fourteen chefs will pair off in head-to-head competitions at The Flying Frog Café. You decide the winner using the same guidelines as a professional food critic! Attendees will enjoy three fantastic creations from each chef, though they won't know which chef has created each dish.
Then the audience will score the dishes to determine who advances to the final competition. Tickets to these culinary events are only $39 per guest (not including drinks, tax, and gratuity).

Quantum Touch, The Power to Heal, with Rev. Pam Hurst.
Wednesday, July 14 at 7 pm
Unity Center, Fletcher, NC
Quantum Touch is a simple technique that can be learned by anyone with the desire. It concentrates and raises your life force energy to a higher vibration, one of health and peace. This energy comes through you and heals you first, then goes to where you are sending it and that individual/animal/plant then resonates with the vibration and they are healed.
Quantum Touch is international and is an Approved Provider for educational credits for nurses as well as massage therapists because of the scientific proof supporting the work.
Dr. Norman Shealy, MD. states "it is the one modality that may allow everyone to become a healer."
Quantum Touch gives an individual the ability of holding up their personal vibration and not going to a lower vibration of others, such as when shopping or around individuals who are not well. We are energy and the law of resonance automatically entrains us with the energy around us unless we know how to raise our vibration and hold it.
Please join us for an introduction to Quantum Touch. Pam Hurst will give a talk on Quantum Touch while demonstrating on anyone who chooses to experience it. Love Offering. A Quantum Touch Basic Workshop will be offered in the area.
Rev. Pam Hurst, an Interfaith Minister, teaches ACIM, and is a National Certified Quantum Touch Instructor and Practitioner full-time for over 5 years. She has experienced many miracles. She states "With Quantum Touch my job is to have and send a high vibration, knowing the body heals itself. I just 'see' unlimited potential, not limiting the results."

Where: Asheville-Buncombe County Technical Institute; Asheville Campus

In April, at the White House Conference on America’s Great Outdoors, President Obama established the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to develop a conservation and recreation agenda worthy of the 21st century and to reconnect Americans with our great outdoors.
The President understands that protecting and restoring the lands and waters that we love and reconnecting people to the outdoors must be community driven and supported.
The President directed the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality to lead this effort and to listen and learn from people all over the country.
Please join senior representatives of these agencies for a public listening session and discussion on land conservation, recreation, and reconnecting Americans to the great outdoors.
In the Southeast, many citizens and organizations are deeply involved in the conservation of working farms, forests, lakes, and rivers, scenic lands, and historic areas, and in celebrating and enjoying the region’s rich outdoor and cultural heritage.
This public listening session and discussion is an opportunity for leaders of the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to hear from you about solutions for building a 21st century conservation and recreation agenda and reconnecting all Americans with the outdoors.
Please join us – here are the details:

With the goal of linking the farmer and baker in North Carolina, the North Carolina Organic Bread Flour Project is laying the groundwork for the future Carolina Ground Flour Mill, dedicated to grains grown and ground on Carolina ground.
Although North Carolina has not traditionally been a hard (bread) wheat growing state, since 2002 the USDA has been conducting hard wheat trials throughout the state and the results have been quite encouraging, both in the field and in the bakery.
For the last year and a half this project has been driven by a core group of seven bakeries in the WNC region-- Annies, West End, Farm & Sparrow, Flat Rock Village Bakery, Loafchild, Wildflour, and Wake Robin.
The NCOBFP is an initiative of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association with funding from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

Then the audience will score the dishes to determine who advances to the final competition. Tickets to these culinary events are only $39 per guest (not including drinks, tax, and gratuity).

Awakening Yeshua: Seven Sacred Lights of Aramaic Yeshua
Wednesday, July 21 from 7 to 9 pm
Unity Center, Fletcher, NC
Dale Allen Hoffman focuses on seven core truths, or sacred lights, from the original Aramaic teachings of Yeshua.
His invocation and group intonations of the teachings of Yeshua brings their blessings through, in the Aramaic in which they were first spoken and then expands them through clear interpretations in English.
Participants will then be invited into a healing prayer circle with the intent of awakening energies, sitting or lying down, and further insights into the higher gifts being received. Gently guided conscious breathing allows the sacred moment to sink deep within. Love Offering: $25 suggested.
Dale Allen Hoffman is an "eternal student of the Aramaic teachings of Yeshua (Jesus) and a 15-year teacher of spiritual insights from the ancient Aramaic language and culture. Brevard Little Theatre presents "Anything Goes"
Directed by Al Edick
Musical comedy, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, book by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse
Thursdays through Sundays,
July 22 to 25 and July 29 through August 1
Madcap antics abound on the S.S. American as "anything goes!" A trans-Atlantic ocean liner and its zany passenger list form the backdrop for

businessmen, young couples in love, and the occasional laughable gangster thrown in for good measure.
Hugely successful in its initial Broadway run and numerous revivals, this bubbly musical introduced
tunes that have been standards for decades: “You’re the Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Let’s Misbehave” and “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” will be stuck in your head for days. This is a musical voyage well worth taking--welcome aboard!
COMPLIMENTARY OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION after July 22nd performance.
All productions staged at BLT's new home, in the American Legion Hall, 55 East Jordan Street, in downtown Brevard.

Rock Hill SC piano & violin duo, Ananda, make their first appearance in the mountains of NC on Saturday July 24th at the Well-Bred Bakery & Cafe in Weaverville, NC. The evening will be a performance and celebration of the release of their first recording, "Still Waters". A portion of the CD proceeds will benefit Hospice.
Composer & pianist, PJ Brunson describes the music as a "magical merger of Celtic, Classical, and New Age influences where the intent is to calm, comfort and heal". Violinist Laurie Neal has performed with the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra and currently performs with the Westminster Presbyterian Church Orchestra and Praise band, and sometimes as a duet with her guitarist husband, Dennis.
"Still Waters" contains 16 original instrumental compositions often described as "moving and melodic". Also included on the collection are the duo's versions of "What Child Is This" and "Amazing Grace".
Ananda formed just over a year and a half ago and has been busy with many weddings, receptions, and special events ever since. The free concert is scheduled for 7:00-9:00 PM on Saturday. PJ has performed at the Well-Bred on numerous occasions as a solo singer-songwriter and guitarist. This is Ananda's first appearance there.
Well-Bred Bakery is located at 26 North Main Street, Weaverville, NC 28787. Phone (828)645-9300.

Brevard Little Theatre presents "Anything Goes"
Directed by Al Edick
Musical comedy, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, book by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse
Thursdays through Sundays,
July 22 to 25 and July 29 through August 1
Madcap antics abound on the S.S. American as "anything goes!" A trans-Atlantic ocean liner and its zany passenger list form the backdrop for
implausible tales of comic intrigue featuring clownish rich folks, dancing sailors, a cabaret act, celebrity-hunting vacationers, traveling
businessmen, young couples in love, and the occasional laughable gangster thrown in for good measure.

The main purpose of the "Hiking Hounds" is for AHS volunteers and shelter dogs to have fun in the beautiful outdoors of Western North Carolina. Besides getting fresh air with our canine hikers, Hiking Hounds adds an enriching activity to a dog's stay at the shelter, exposes dogs to new things and reinforces obedience, burns off some energy in a positive way, increases adoptability by having more exposure to the public, and offers volunteers a new way to interact with the animals.
New volunteers meet at 8:30 AM at the shelter on the scheduled day for a quick orientation. Volunteers who have already attended the orientation can arrive at 9:00 AM. Volunteers fill out an application and sign a waiver prior to departure. Volunteers are matched up with appropriate dogs, pre-selected by shelter staff and the Hiking Hound Coordinator.
If you would like to participate, contact us directly via email at ahshikinghounds@yahoo.com before the hike!

WNC Chefs Challenge
Join us for a battle between 14 of the area's top chefs!
The weekly heats for the WNC Chefs Challenge take place every Tuesday, starting May 18. Fourteen chefs will pair off in head-to-head competitions at The Flying Frog Café. Each chef will have access to the same pantry, but will be given a secret ingredient the day of the event that must be featured in their culinary creations.
When only two chefs remain, they will battle it out on Saturday, August 14, in an Iron Chef-style competition during the WNC Magazine Asheville Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting held at the Expo Center on the WNC Agricultural Grounds Campus near the Asheville Regional Airport.

Move to Schools Moves ASAP and Partners to Plan Chef Summit
The need to overhaul the menus of most school cafeterias has been the topic of conversation recently thanks to the launch of Michelle Obama's Chefs Move to Schools program. The new program, run by the USDA, hopes to pair chefs with schools in their respective communities to help cafeterias serve up healthy meals.
Cooking with school kids has the spotlight now, but ASAP and local chefs have been working with schools since before 2007. Laurey Masterton of Laurey's Catering and Gourmet to Go, who was recently invited to the White House as part of the Chefs Move to Schools launch, is one of the chefs that has worked in area schools. (Charles Hudson of Sunburst Trout and Jacob Sessoms of Table also recently headed to Washington.) In addition to Laurey, Charles, and Jacob, chefs from Greenlife Grocery, Mamacita's, The Market Place, and Knife & Fork have also been a part of school programs.
Laurey has come back from the White House more fired up than ever, and she wants to see even more chefs in schools. So, she's teamed up with us here at ASAP, and together we're planning a Chef Summit for July 28th from 2-3:30 at her restaurant. We want all chefs that are already involved or who would like to be to join us. Let's move our chefs to schools!
Want to attend?
Call Emily Jackson, program coordinator, at 828-236-1282 ext. 101. The summit will be held on July 28 from 2-3:30 at Laurey's Catering and Gourmet to Go, 67 Biltmore Avenue.
We invite you to join our steering committee to help create unique workshops and events to support local artists enhance their business skills. In this meeting, we will be working on the final touches for our August workshop.
The Asheville Artist Alliance mission is to provide assistance and opportunities to WNC artists for the development of business skills needed to succeed in their venue.
The Asheville Artist Alliance is in its sixth year of producing Artist Seminar Series workshops and events, which are designed for WNC artists to provide assistance and opportunities to develop successful business skills.

Awaken Your Innate Generosity~ Teachings from the Buddhist Ten Perfections, with Reverend Deborah-Marie Diamond, M.A.
Wednesday, July 28 at 7 pm
Unity Center, Fletcher, NC
Enlightenment isn't like the drive through: order at one window and pick up your enlightenment at the next. Though we wish it were that easy! It is a process of practicing spiritual principles daily as we inch along. In each of us is innate generosity. We are mostly eager to give and love, but then what if you don't like someone?
In the perfection of innate generosity, Deborah-Marie will guide you through ways to recognize when your heart is closed and how to open it again. With drumming, chanting, story telling and more she will guide you gently through a process of awakening your innate generosity. Love Offering.
Rev. Deborah-Marie Diamond, M.A. is a spiritual teacher, author, drummer, and dancer. She creates a safe place to explore who you really are, to express your creativity and awaken your inner knowing. Learn more about her work at www.deborahmdiamond.com and www.zediamonddancemethod.com

Description:
Dear Community Member:
Next summer, we are producing a tour for the documentary Fish out of Water, and one of our tour stops will be in your
city! You are receiving this letter because a friend or community ally has suggested we contact you about becoming a
tour stop field producer.
A little about who we are and what we are doing:
What is the Great American Outing:
The Great American Outing is a three-week road trip aimed at eradicating misconceptions about the Bible’s stance on
homosexuality by offering free screenings of the film Fish Out of Water.
Launching in the summer of 2010, the tour will
make 14 stops throughout the South and Midwest offering free screenings and panel discussions.
Fish out of Water was crafted to be a toolbox to help the LGBTQ community and their allies combat Bible based
discrimination. As you know, the Bible is the primary fuel for anti-gay arguments. Whether someone is gay or straight,
religious or nonreligious, very few people are able to articulate what the Bible really says about homosexuality. Fish out
of Water serves is a useful, entertaining tool that helps people breach the conversation of the Bible, in an inclusive,
non-hostile, accessible way.
What to expect at Screenings:
Screenings in each city will be tailored to community needs. Field producers in each city will be key players in helping
the Great American Outing team to understand what would be best for their community.
Speakers, panelists, community leaders, musicians, etc, whom have a strong place within their community are invited
to join in making the screening impactful for each locale. Local personalities will join with those traveling to all cities to
discuss how Fish Out of Water can be used as a tool in their community and next steps to continue the work needed
within the community.
Outdoor screenings in a neutral location are preferred in each city as to provide a welcome place to gather for all
members of the community. Field Producers will suggest locations where screenings could be accommodated.
If locations are on city property we will need to obtain permits. As a back up to the outdoor screenings, an indoor
location must also be secured in case of bad weather.
Who is our target audience?
We are targeting gays and lesbians struggling to reconcile their faith and sexuality. We are targeting family members
who have a hard time believing their gay/lesbian loved one is truly a perfect child of God. We are targeting clergy
members and educators who are on the fence about the Christianity’s acceptance of gays and lesbians. By bringing
these diverse groups into one place attend the screening, we can begin the conversations that need to be had in order
to not only change hearts and minds, but to give local groups the facility to begin to organize the work that will
continue to change hearts and minds. As a large community gathering, the stage will be set to recruit volunteers, raise
group membership, promote LGBTQ friendly businesses, and provide a fun and educational experience for all
attendees.
What we hope from you:
We are looking for community members and allies who will volunteer to be local “Field Producers.” Field Producers in
each city to help us find a venue, organize a panel and to promote the event.
In each city, we are asking the field producer to work closely with the Great American Outing team to do the following:
Secure a venue for the screening
Organize a panel (Participant options include: educators, politicians, religious leaders, youth activists, etc)
Find community volunteers to help lodge us for 1-2 nights while our team is in town
Find community volunteers or local restaurants who can donate meals for us while we’re in town
Help promote the screenings (alert faith groups, LGBTQ groups and the media about the event/screening)
Host a fundraiser in hopes to raise money for gas, and hotels in between your city and our next city. (We’re
hoping each field producer can raise at least $3000 through fundraisers, corporate sponsors and individual
donors).
The amount of money each field producer raises will directly impact the size of event in their city. We encourage you
to be creative and to reach out to any of the various groups/people to make your city’s screening perfect for you own
community:
Groups in each city to involve:
Affirming churches (UUC, MCC, UCC, etc)
PFLAG
GSA
GLSEN
Musicians, Artists and poets
Political Offices (The country will be in the swing of a mid-term election)
Student organizations
Progressive community members
Activist groups
Equality networks
• Please remember that Great American Outing Screenings events will be free.
• Any corporate sponsors or individual donors will be listed on our website.
We need to have our field producers locked down by Friday, February 26th. Please let us know if you will be part of our
team.
Sincerely,
Ky Dickens (Director, Fish out of Water)
Elizabeth Chase (Producer, Great American Outing)

WNC Jazz Society presents the FREDDY COLE QUARTET
Saturday, July 31, 8:00 pm
DIANA WORTHAM THEATRE, ASHEVILLE
World-class venues such as Asheville’s Diana Wortham Theatre call for world-class musicians, a role which international recording artist, vocalist, and pianist Freddy Cole & his Quartet fill with ease.
The Diana Wortham Theatre will join the ranks of renowned venues to feature this stellar group recently: Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the Blue Note Jazz Clubs in New York City and Milan.
Cole doesn’t apologize for a style that faintly echoes his brother, Nat "King" Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano masterfully and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. Freddy clearly has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals—suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate—are among the most respected in jazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he’s moved into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own.
With his signature elegance and authentic cool, legendary vocalist-pianist Freddy Cole’s performances make every audience members’ heart smile. The New York Times recently heaped rare praise in Cole’s direction: “Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing…he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.”
Tickets are $25 for WNC Jazz Society members, $35 for nonmembers and $10 for students with ID under age 25. For tickets, call the Diana Wortham Theater box office at 828.257.4530. For more information, visit wncjazzsociety.org.
