"Who Will Contro the Internet in the 21st Century?" - Jubilee!
|
Description: |
Dear Friends – Eighteen months ago, we began asking for your support in
winning access to the “white spaces” spectrum – the vacant TV channels –
in order to expand broadband Internet access in WNC and other underserved
areas.
In November 2008, we won that FCC vote with a stunning and unanimous 5-0
decision. At that time, our public-interest and industry allies estimated
that this new “white spaces” (WS) broadband wireless technology would be
on the market in 18-24 months.
Unfortunately, this estimate is not panning out. There are several reasons
for this delay, not the least of which is the economic collapse.
But momentum to solve the rural broadband crisis is building again in
Washington.
Last year, Congress ordered the FCC to draft a National Broadband Plan to
address this crisis and more. That plan was published in March, and
shortly thereafter the Wall Street-backed telephone and cable companies –
and their allies – launched a ferocious campaign to weaken the FCC and
block reform by trumpeting “a government take-over of the Internet.”
I recently published a guest column on this in the Asheville
Citizen-Times:

I will also be discussing these developments Thursday, July 1 in a talk
entitled “Who Will Control the Internet in the 21st-Century?” This talk is
set for 7:30 p.m. at Jubilee Community, 46 Wall Street, in downtown
Asheville. [If you are interested in having this talk in your community,
please contact MAIN at 828.255.0182.]
Please share this link with your friends and neighbors. It includes a PDF
link to a flyer which you can print and post in your community.

broadband crisis. And please continue to visit the MAIN homepage –

Internet develops.
