Flatiron Writers Room West Asheville – 2017 Schedule

Write Here. Write Now.

We host Flatiron Writers workshops and events; in addition, our space is available for rent to writers who want to teach, host a book launch, or hold a writers’ group or book club meeting. Our goal: to nurture a vibrant and supportive writing community–inspired by Asheville’s rich literary history–while providing writers with quiet, affordable space in which to write, and classrooms in which to teach or participate in classes and workshops.

Kathryn Stripling Byer, 1944-2017 – from the North Carolina Writers’ Network

CULLOWHEE—In 2013, we held the Squire Summer Writing Residency at Western Carolina University, where Kathryn Stripling Byer taught for so many years, and she led the poetry workshop at the Residency that weekend.

WCU was a welcoming host and venue, with one exception: in the building where we slept and took our classes, the air conditioning was stuck on overdrive, and we were freezing.

And then, after our first lunch together, Kay disappeared.

ASHEVILLE MUSIC GUIDE Shows You Won’t Want to Miss:

Cllick here for THIS WEEKS SHOWS!

Why we exist

Asheville has a vibrant music community, but reading through dozens of venue websites can be tedious and time consuming. With so many shows happening each week, it can be easy to miss one of your favorite bands. Asheville Music Guide (AMG) is an independent, locally developed online resource that aims to help fans of live music stay up to date with shows happening at all of the venues in Asheville.

Story

Being avid concert goers, musicians, and Asheville residents, we realized the need for something to keep track of upcoming concerts in the area, and then decided to build it. From intimate acoustic sets to dirty rock ‘n roll bands to nationally-known headlining artists, AMG is the home for all things Asheville Music. But, we’re more than just your run of the mill online event calendar. We recognize that you have certain preferences and your own eclectic music taste. Build and save a personalized schedule of your can’t-miss shows, favorite musicians, and go to venues. There’s an everest of music out there, let us be your guide.

Featured Artist: DAVID LA MOTTE

LaMotte’s first album in a decade offers twelve new songs played by three dozen musicians from six continents. A fusion of cultural influences, from blues to bluegrass and from Latin to African, are mixed together by LaMotte and his two co-producers, Chris Rosser and Tom Prasada-Rao, to create an aural travelogue that mirrors LaMotte’s own geographical journey in the last ten years. The songs are also informed by his personal journey—becoming a father, living and working around the world, and exploring his own capacity for positive impact in questions of justice and peace.

Lisa Unger Baskin Collection – Duke University Libraries “The unifying thread is that women have always been productive and working people and this history essentially has been hidden.”

Collection Overview

The Lisa Unger Baskin Collection arrived at Rubenstein Library in April 2015. Carefully assembled over forty-five years by noted bibliophile, activist, and collector Lisa Unger Baskin, the collection is a transformative body of material documenting women at work. In Baskin’s own words,

“The unifying thread is that women have always been productive and working people and this history essentially has been hidden.”

The collection includes many well-known monuments of women’s history and arts, as well as lesser-known works produced by female scholars, printers, publishers, laborers, scientists, authors, artists, and political activists. Taken together, they comprise a mosaic of the ways that women have been productive, creative, and socially engaged over more than five hundred years.   Continue reading

On Being – Running as Spiritual Practice

by Billy Mills, Christina Torres, Ashley Hicks, et al

We explore a topic our listeners have called out as a passionate force and a connector across all kinds of boundaries in American culture: running. Not just as exercise, or as a merely physical pursuit, but running as a source of bonding between parents and children and friends, as an interplay between competition and contemplation; as a way to understand body image and survival and healing.

IN-KIND SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE for festivals & fundraisers

Because we believe that viable non-profit programs are essential to a healthy community,  SheVille.org has in-kind media sponsorship packages available.

SPACE FOR IN-KIND ADVERTISING IS LIMITED PER MONTH, so please send in your request as early in the year as you can. Your press release will run for up to two months before the event.

WHAT MAKES SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES DIFFERENT is that, along with all the other placements, we will design a Top Banner for your organization that announces your fundraiser. Top Banners as well as Sidebar Banners roam throughout the magazine and give tremendous visibility.  Banners are especially effective as they offer great visibility for people looking for opportunities for volunteering or donating to our community.

There are no design fees or other hidden fees associated with this offer as long as you provide us with your press release and the jpgs you want us to use.

This advertising package is valued at $750.00.

WHAT WE ASK IN RETURN is that you send out the ad link you will receive to YOUR BOARD, FRIENDS AND FAMILIES, as well as name SheVille.org as a media sponsor on your website and in sponsorship information for the event.

Please also refer any local/regional businesses to SheVille who might be looking for good, affordable marketing for their business!                                                                         Call  (828) 338-0217 or (828) 215-2915 or Email: info@sheville.org
