Why study women, minorities, or other controversial subjects at all? The answer is: a good liberal education (liberal as in "freedom," okay?) should teach people to either think inside the box - or think outside of it. Many educational areas have become so allied with a vocational plan that they tend to teach procedures, not the ability to think, or to solve problems. A good women's studies program can encourage its students to creatively examine their surroundings and learn to identify both the empowering and disempowering properties of words and deeds. Gender and Women’s Studies considers the relationship of race, gender, class and ethnicity and addresses the manifestation and effects of gender bias in society.
