Carolina Mountains Literary Festival Announces Theme

One of the biggest steps of planning for the annual Carolina Mountains Literary Festival held each September in Burnsville is the brainstorming and development of the theme and art work that sets the tone for the three day event. This year’s theme, featuring a red combed chicken sporting a luggage tag and a suitcase as she gazes down a dirt road, is “Take Me There.”
According to Britt Kauffman, program committee chair and artistic director for the festival, the group tasked with selecting authors for this year’s event, to be held Sept. 12, 13 and 14, are all naturally enough avid readers. “We all agreed that literature is something that transports us, so we cast about for a theme that would illustrate that idea.” It wasn’t’ long before the group, many of whom raise chickens, thought about the old joke of the chicken crossing the road, she reported. “The theme implies how literature takes us new places, but also implies ‘Come to Burnsville’ while the artwork at the same time speaks to our sense of humor that the festival planners are noted for.”
This year’s theme of allowing literature to take the reader to new places is highlighted by the festival’s keynote speaker, suspense author Elizabeth Kostova, whose prize-winning fiction can be described as part Gothic and part travelogue. With a background in Bulgarian and Bosnian history, folklore and music, her stories roam from dusty Ivy League libraries and American art museums to Normandy and on through Istanbul and Budapest into the monasteries and archives of Eastern Europe. She will speak at the festival’s Saturday Night Dinner Banquet, to be held Sept. 14 at the Town Center.
Last year’s banquet sold out, with 100 attendees. Registration and payment for the banquet, as well as for the festival workshops, begins June 1. Registration forms as well as a complete list of authors presenting at this year’s event may be found at cmlitfest.org. The group may also be followed on Facebook. |

About An Appalachian Summer Festival
An Appalachian Summer Festival is presented annually in July by the university’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. Beginning as a small chamber music series founded by festival patrons Arnold and Muriel Rosen, the festival is now one of the nation’s most highly regarded, multi-disciplinary art festivals. The festival has been named on of the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society. While many of its artists are world-renowned, this distinctive arts celebration also prides itself on presenting new works from emerging artists whose names may not be instantly recognizable, but who many festival fans claim have created some of their most memorable moments. True to a university-based arts festival, educational opportunities, including lectures and chances to meet artists, artistic directors, competition jurors and other experts, have always been an important component of festival programming.
Sponsors
An Appalachian Summer Festival’s success is due in large part to generous support from loyal private donors, as well as a dedicated group of corporate and media sponsors, many of whom have supported the festival for more than a decade. For a list of the festival’s sponsors or to find out how to become a sponsor, visit http://appsummer.org/sponsorship. |
