New Cabaret Jazz Series Launches at White Horse Black Mountain May 24th

Band/Swing Era favorites along with original compositions. Many jazz fans have driven from as far away as Brevard, Boone, and even Charlotte to enjoy high quality jazz at the White Horse.

This past Valentines Day, jazz vocalist Wendy Jones and acclaimed jazz pianist Michael Jefry Stevens performed a wonderful jazz dinner concert to a large and appreciative audience. Following that highly successful evening, White Horse Co-Manager Don Talley began discussions with me about putting together a series of vocal jazz concerts. “White Horse offers a unique setting for live music which is both relaxed and refined. We’ve carved out our own niche in Western North Carolina as a “listening room” where the focus is on the intimate connection between artist and audience. We want our customers to feel right at home and to know that they’ll hear top quality performances at reasonable prices. We are confident that the new Cabaret Jazz Dinner Concert series will be a huge success.” commented Talley.

White Horse owner Bob Hinkle added, “A stellar lineup of talent has been assembled. The performers in this series have established impressive jazz careers over many years. They are true veterans of their craft and have performed in top venues around the world. We are able to offer world class jazz to our audiences which they’d normally have to travel to a large city to hear.”

The first concert in the series takes place on Friday May 24th” and will feature singers Russ Wilson, Harry Shultz and Jesse Earl Jr., plus Nathan Hefner on piano and vocals, Zack Page on bass, and Rick Dilling on drums. The theme for this show is “Boys Night Out”.

Other upcoming shows in the series include:

June 28th: "Love, Lies and Liasons" with Wendy Jones – vocals, Michael Jefry Stevens – piano, Jack Page – bass, Rick Dilling – drums.

July 26th: "Straight From the Heart" with Rockell Scott – vocals, Bill Bares – piano, Zack Page – bass, Justin Watt – drums.

For thirty-six years, ACDT and the New Studio of Dance have been exploring unique ways to interpret ancient, well-known folk tales. This season is no exception. Their selection for this season, “Swan Lake,” is a true classic based on the original story, “The Stolen Veil,” written at the end of the 18th Century by German author Johann Karl Musaus. It was later called the “Field of Swans” and translated into music and dance by the Russians, who made the ballet famous.

“Swan Lake” is a story of a magical spring with water that makes a woman ageless and more beautiful, if she has fairy blood in her veins. It is a story of transformation and devotion.

New Studio and ACDT add a little “splash” to this ancient story and contemporize it with a setting in Asheville, NC and its surrounding areas in the period of 2013. Look for characters that transform at a local lake, some charming surprises and unusual plot developments. This all-ages performance is not to be missed, for “Swan Lake with a Splash” will always be remembered for its lessons in devotion and love.

Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre and New Studio of Dance are well known in the southeast for their innovative dance theatre productions, consistently reaching out to different populations and community groups to create new and rewarding relationships. This year’s production will include guest artists from Mexico as well as students and professional performers.

Emphasis on theatricality, humor, and pathos make the work accessible to a wide variety of audiences, while elaborate sets and costumes in combination with dance and theatre make every performance a multi-media event.

B-Girl Event Celebrates Women in Hip Hop

In San Diego last month, b-girls and graffiti artists danced and painted their way into what is generally an all-male world.

In a dusty yard divided by long, plywood panels thick with layers of paint, over a dozen women staked out their spots. Visitors walking up and down the rows watched as each artist’s individual style emerged: complex, angular lettering here, a flowing abstract design there, bold round text just around the corner. Embellished with everything from large, whimsical cupcakes that bookended the work of one artist to the sweeping, delicate flourishes of another, each piece was both statement and self-portrait.
