In previous articles in this series, I have written about avoiding the situation, the ‘prey vs. predator’ mindset, and awareness – all important aspects of self defense. My instructor used to say “the best technique is no technique,” meaning that if you can manage to avoid having to use any physical self defense techniques - that’s the best self defense of all! But unfortunately, there are no guarantees. Even if you do everything right, you could still find yourself confronted by a threat some day. Anyone can be targeted – the young, the old, the aware, the distracted, the single woman, the married mother of three, the careful, and the careless. It could happen simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. more...

New information about food and diet appears every day. An e-mail about “secret” calories in soft drinks, a friend’s personal endorsement of a trendy diet, news reports about conflicting research on red wine… what is true, and how do you separate the truth from the fiction when it comes to nutrition information?
During National Nutrition Month®, the American Dietetic Association urges consumers to look beyond the myths of nutrition, focus on the facts and remember the theme for the month, Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact.

The joy that arises from the dance of Lomi, will be communicated directly into your body. Secondly, the practitioner will be able to go as deep or as superficial as your tissue’s require. more...

The Psychological Aspects of Self Defense: Awareness
When you hear the term “self defense” you probably think of physical skills. However, in the recent article “Prey vs. Predator,” I made the point that self defense has a psychological component. Mindset is critical to relinquishing the status of ‘prey’ that many of us have internalized simply by growing up in a society in which women are frequently victimized. more...

when you think of eating, what feelings and thoughts come to mind?
are they generally positive, or... do they tend to have a negative connotation;
bringing with them feelings of resentment, frustration or even a sense of lack
of control? because we live in a diet-oriented society, many of the feelings we
have may be coming from the ideals that society has placed upon us. there is a
'diet mentality,' that has helped shape our thinking and we feel a need to be
restrictive with what we eat to in order lose weight, to look a certain way. deprivation
with food, sets us up for failure because we are fighting against the natural
need of our body to have nourishment. how do we go about creating a positive,
lasting change? well, we start with how we think about food. more...

Where do you tend to hold your stress? If you’re like most people, you’re probably thinking your neck, shoulders, and upper back. With all the sitting we do on a daily basis- we’re bringing our bodies into a posture that the bones and muscles weren’t made to hold for such long periods of time. But because the body is an amazing machine- it has learned how to compromise its original structure (proper posture), in order to support us in our daily routines and activities. This can be related to driving a vehicle when the tires haven’t been aligned and balanced. The vehicle can drive like this for a while, but eventually something is going to breakdown. Same goes for the body, and we usually experience the first signs of “breakdown” as tightness and/or pain. Research has found, for example, that letting your head jut forward is associated with neck, back, and even jaw pain. The relationship of one body part to another is the essence of posture. When you stand or sit with your joints, muscles, and ligaments in proper alignment, you reduce the strain on your body, and in turn, keep yourself out of pain. more...

Take a moment to imagine yourself in a familiar situation. You are out for a walk, on one of your favorite routes. Perhaps you’re walking in your neighborhood, or on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or around Beaver Lake. It’s a beautiful Spring evening, but you are keeping up a good pace, in order to make it back to your car before it gets dark. For the last few minutes you’ve been thinking about dinner possibilities. It would be tempting to pick something up on the way home, but you’ve been eating out so much lately…..let’s see...there’s chicken in the freezer, what could you do with the chicken? You remember mushrooms in the crisper drawer, what else?.... Your thoughts are suddenly interrupted, however, when you notice a man on the path up ahead of you. At first it looks as if he is standing still, but then he turns and begins walking toward you. Hit the pause button there. What are you feeling? What are you thinking? Are you still thinking about dinner? Probably not. more...

Two years ago I went to my grandmother’s home to interview her. It was canning and freez-ing season, after the harvest, a beautiful late summer day. Her husband, Cecil was alive, but ill. “I hate to be a burden to you,” he told her, as he grew weaker and weaker with emphysema. “Don’t you say nothing,” she told him. “I’d rather wheel you around in that wheel barraw than be here without you.” Today Cecil is gone, and the vegetable and flower gardens in this article are smaller. She has seen so much pass away... the love of her life, the mountains, the clear rivers, the neighborliness of commu-nity, even that pure mountain dialect that turns a phrase in uncommon ways.
