CAMP MUDDY SNEAKERS Environmental Education & The Joy of Learning Outside

This summer we will have our Trail Blazer Camp, a full-day field-based camp for rising 4th through 7th graders, and Nature Explorers Camp, a half-day place-based experience for rising 1st through 3rd graders.

Camp Muddy Sneakers will continue to offer summer day camp programs to an expanded age range. This summer we will have our Trail Blazer Camp, a full-day field-based camp for rising 4th through 7th graders, and Nature Explorers Camp, a half-day place-based experience for rising 1st through 3rd graders.

Join our team of Muddy Sneakers naturalists as we continue the adventure next summer! Through hands-on, experiential learning, our campers gain a deep understanding of the natural world and have the opportunity to explore the peaks, creeks, and wild woodlands that make western NC so magical.

Camp Muddy Sneakers has worked with partners to establish Base Camp sites in each county. These existing campuses will host the Nature Explorers Camps as well as serve as the drop off/pick up/rain location for the Trail Blazer Camps. Multiple one-week sessions will be offered in Brevard and Hendersonville.

Camp Muddy Sneakers is based on a philosophy that kids need to develop a connection to the natural world at an early age and there is no better way to do that than through meaningful and fun outdoor experiences on the incredible lands that surround us here in western NC! Our day camps are focused on getting kids outdoors to inspire curiosity, connect with nature, stay active, and cultivate a sense of stewardship. Campers not only have a lot of fun but also learn about various ecosystems through experiential activities while exploring the forests and streams of Western North Carolina. Each session is taught by highly qualified Muddy Sneakers naturalists in small, co-ed groups.

Continuous exposure to the outdoor classroom (6-10 days over the course of the academic year) through utilizing a diverse portfolio of natural areas in close proximity to the school. Muddy Sneakers has developed an extraordinarily cost-effective, results-driven model for learning by engaging children through the natural world.

Here are just a few reasons why we are unique:

Strong commitment to partnering with teachers and administrators

Small group focus (maximum of 12 students per instructor)

Emphasis on establishing and refining a model of excellence that produces measurable results

We see ourselves as a ‘gateway’ program that seeks to introduce the concept of environmental literacy into the public schools at a critical developmental stage. Beyond enhanced scholastic achievement, the aim of Muddy Sneakers is to build life-long bonds between the students we work with and the natural world.

In Western North Carolina, Muddy Sneakers serves 25 schools across seven counties and eight school districts to an increasingly diverse cross-section of students from Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Mitchell, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford Counties.  Click for more information: Muddy Sneakers WNC
