Appalachian State University Women's Studies Program
Sheville Staff
Appalachian State University Women's Studies Program was founded in 1976 and
is the second oldest program in the state. It provides academic leadership to
the community for the study of women's and gender issues, and gender/feminist/womanist
theories. This leadership finds expression both in the classroom as well as
in a variety of other venues. In order to accomplish this mission, the program
offers a new approach to traditional academic disciplines by incorporating the
study and contribution of women; an interdisciplinary model of scholarship constructed
around women's and gender issues as well as gender/feminist/womanist theories;
an open atmosphere for the exchange of ideas and expressions of concern over
a wide range of women's and gender issues on our campus and in our society.
The Appalachian State Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies allows students
to seek training at the graduate level in women's studies and get formal recognition
for completing this training successfully.

Mars Hill College Women's Studies
Sheville Staff
Mars Hill College Women's Studies is an academic field of study that utilizes
a particular framework through which to view critical intellectual issues. This
interdisciplinary minor examines and analyzes the world from a variety of perspectives.
Through the study of the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and
physical education, the minor affirms the existence, integrity, and value of
women's diverse experiences. While students pursue their own intellectual, spiritual,
and personal growth, Women's Studies helps students analyze the experiences
of women and men in various cultures.
Committed to freedom of inquiry and to building bridges beyond academia, the
Women's Studies program seeks to improve communication and to prepare and equip
women and men for service and leadership. Dr. Laurie Pedersen lpedersen@mhc.edu 828.689.1456
UNC Asheville Women's Studies
Sheville Staff
UNC Asheville Women's Studies seeks to understand the diversity of women's
experiences through an interdisciplinary program of teaching, service and research.
Women's Studies courses and electives explore the experiences of women and investigate
the complex phenomenon of gender. Courses promote student investigation
of women's diverse experiences from the perspective of the various social sciences,
sciences and humanities. Emerging from an activist tradition, Women's
Studies seeks to provide resources to the university and the broader community
by providing an on-going array of co-curricular activities for students and
community members. We act as a resource and guide on issues relating to
women through community activism and service by encouraging interdisciplinary
techniques and by being wholly cognizant of the interaction of gender and diversity.

Sheville Staff
Warren Wilson College Gender and Women's Studies explores the intersections of
gender, class, race and ethnicity and asks students to challenge their traditional
knowledge about women and men by examining the idiosyncrasies among women. By
examining dynamics affecting the lives of women throughout the world, this interdisciplinary
view encourages students to address the diversity of women’s perspectives.
Courses are drawn from many disciplines and introduce students to the intellectual,
social, political, economic, spiritual, and artistic contributions and experiences
and roles of both women and men in a variety of historical and cultural contexts.

Western Carolina University Women's Studies Program
Sheville Staff
Western Carolina University Women's Studies program currently consists of a
minor, which is continuously growing. Through academics, the minor provides
an understanding of women's issues and contributions to society by emphasizing
abilities and gender roles. Using interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teaching,
the Women's Studies minor encourages the inclination of women's perspectives
and accomplishments within all academic disciplines as opposed to restricting
women to only certain categories. The goals of this minor include providing
the realization of a women's perspective across disciplines, understanding what
the world looks like from a female point of view, looking at issues which include
women's health, family, sexual harassment, family violence, rape, etc., providing
a voice for women in the areas of law, politics, literature and history
