*FEATURE: REGIONAL PERFORMING ARTISTS and friends of SheVille – So, why is performance art important, you ask?
In the closing decades of the 20th century, performing arts critics became increasingly despondent about the longevity of these art forms. Many believed that the performing arts would gradually become obsolete, thanks to the rise of the TV and also of the early Internet. The critics stated that the arts would become as relevant to 21st-century society as string quartets were to their own time, and believed that gradually, the performing arts world would become unfashionable and little used by society.

A Message from Steve Lloyd – To all of our patrons, volunteers, actors, directors and supporters
The past two weeks have been very difficult for us all. Exactly two weeks ago we had a finance committee meeting and I was asked what would be the worst case scenario of this health crisis. My answer seemed impossible but I replied that we would shut down, everyone would be laid off, including me, the theater would be moth balled and we would hope to preserve as much of our capital as possible so we would have the ability to reopen when the time came.

SHE LOVED HORSES: Thea & The Green Man new CD release
She Loved Horses, by Thea, is a new CD release of heart-opening songs with emotional impact and spiritual roots by an award-winning, singer-songwriter. Thea spent her early childhood barefoot among the Seminole Indians on the banks of the Miami River, and all of her childhood summers in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where she currently resides in Asheville. These influences, along with her abiding love of nature, weave images of river, ocean, mountain and canyon through her songwriting.

‘Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am’ review: Irresistible voice of beloved writer shines through
By Moira Macdonald at Seattle Times
The Nobel Prize-winning writer Toni Morrison has a voice like a warm blanket, and it spreads across the documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” irresistibly; when it’s over, you feel like a beloved friend has left the room. In Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ film, Morrison is seated squarely facing the camera and speaking to it, while the other voices in the film – friends, fellow writers, critics, academics – are shot at a more traditional angle. The result is an intimate directness, a sense of a genuine conversation.

*PERFORMING ART: DANCING BEYOND THE GENDER BINARY – A Three-Part Series
DANCING BEYOND THE GENDER BINARY
Posted by Nancy Dobbs Owen
In this three-part series for LA Dance Chronicle, I am studying the various ways that bullying and gender interact, affecting leadership, individual success and failure, mental health, and representation in dance. If you are coming to this series fresh, you can read the introductory article here. The second piece looks at bullying and the gender gap in leadership. This final piece addresses gay, lesbian, gender fluid and queer representation in dance, both how dancers who don’t fit into the binary have been quashed and how the dance community is finally expanding and starting to include all voices and stories, both in and out of mainstream companies. THE ARTS: Face Masks, The Flute, Virtual Concerts and Simone Leigh
Simone Leigh’s practice incorporates sculpture, video, and installation; all are informed by her ongoing exploration of black female-identified subjectivity. Leigh works in a mode she describes as auto-ethnographic. Her objects often employ materials and forms traditionally associated with African art; her performance-influenced installations create spaces where historical precedent and self-determination commingle.

A New Album Re-Creates The Work Of The 1st Known Female Composers In America
By AVERY KEATLEY in NPR
Chris Herbert was in a hurry. The vocalist and musicologist was studying the Ephrata Codex — an 18th century music manuscript — in the Library of Congress, which meant he was on the clock. Herbert was working on digitizing the Codex. He flipped through the pages, taking pictures of each one, with no time to pause.
A few weeks later while on tour in Europe, he took time to examine his work and noticed something he hadn’t seen before. Zooming in on the images he’d hastily snapped in the Library of Congress, he saw names written in small font beside the musical compositions. Three of those names belonged to women: Sister Föben, Sister Katura and Sister Hanna. CLICK TO CONTINUE

A Viral List of Hundreds of Opportunities for Artists, Compiled by One Person to Encourage Community
By Sarah Rose Sharp in Hyperallergic
Everest Pipkin has made public their “Big Artist Opportunities List” — a collection of over 400 opportunities for artists across the globe.
With the overwhelming reality that artists are expected to somehow maintain a practice, store and ship work, support their scene, self-promote, manage open accounts with galleries — all generally on spec, at least starting out — plus do whatever it takes to pay their bills, who has the time or bandwidth to keep track of opportunities to further one’s practice?

Asheville and Western North Carolina COMMUNITY THEATRE, MUSIC & ART from A – Z

“Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play. “
Wise words from Philip Pullman, who received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2005:
Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play. If you don’t give a child food, the damage quickly becomes visible. If you don’t let a child have fresh air and play, the damage is also visible, but not so quickly. If you don’t give a child love, the damage might not be seen for some years, but it’s permanent.
