ORGANIC GROWERS SCHOOL Hosts New Holistic Crop Management Workshop Series

Asheville, NC: Organic Growers School is launching a new curriculum and training opportunity to Southern Appalachia in partnership with Certified Naturally Grown with funding support from the USDA-Agricultural Marketing Service. Holistic Crop Management is a four-part workshop series led by local farmers and agricultural experts. Growers will gain the tools to manage soil health, weeds, pests and diseases for whole-farm success. Workshops will be held across Northern Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and Southwestern Virginia. 

“We are excited to offer a sustainable crop management training geared towards commercial growers in the Southern Appalachians!” says Cameron Farlow, Organic Growers School’s Farmer Programs Director. “With this curriculum, we wanted to provide technical training about managing soils, weeds, pests, and diseases, and pair it with expertise and hands-on learning led by our local farmers. They are the ones best equipped to translate how the science plays out in the fields and how to put it into practice as they work to grow high-quality crops, efficiently and sustainably,” she continued.


The purpose of this workshop series is to equip farmers with tools that will improve their crop production and management and apply a holistic framework for decision-making. Workshops include classroom discussion learning, hands-on learning, and a farm visit. 


A Holistic Approach to Soil Health: Learn and apply whole-farm management methods, basics of soil science and soil monitoring to increase your farm’s soil health and productivity.

Managing Weeds Holistically: Understand common weed biology, ecology, and identification, as well as preventative practices to reduce weed pressure.

  • 9:00am – 4:00pm Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 – Burnsville, NC
  • 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Friday, January 10th, 2019 – Abingdon, VA

Managing Disease Holistically: Discover ecologically-based preventive, and integrated practices to reduce the impact of disease on your farm.

Managing Pests Holistically: Gain an ecological understanding of pest biology, and management strategies commonly used to prevent pest damage.

  • 9:00am – 4:00pm Tuesday, February 18th, Alexander, NC


The cost for each work day-long is $30, and includes lunch. Pre-registration is required.
